BROWNWOOD The annual “Heart of Texas Cow/Calf Clinic” is set for May 1 in the Brown County Fairground’s Home Economics Building located on U.S. Highway 377 South. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The formal program starts at 9 a.m.
“This year marks the clinic’s silver anniversary,” said Scott Anderson, Texas Cooperative Extension’s agriculture agent for Brown County. “After 25 years, we decided it was time to change a few things. So to start with, we’ve moved.
“For years the clinic has been at the Brown County Coliseum, but the setting there limited some activities. The move to the Brown County Fairgrounds will facilitate more hands-on efforts and live animal demonstrations.
“We’ll also make a bit of history with this year’s clinic. For the first time, we are offering continuing education opportunities for ranchers interested in the Beef Quality Assurance program.”
Anderson explained that the BQA program is an educational effort being done by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, the Texas Beef Council, and Texas Cooperative Extension with input from the Texas Veterinary Medical Association. BQA’s goal is to help cattle producers find the information necessary to produce the safest, highest quality beef possible.
Other topics during the day will include talks on improving cattle weight gains when grazing sorghum and Sudan forages, making the right cow/calf operation decisions, and managing shrink on sale calves (live cattle demonstration).
The clinic will also feature a trade show with numerous agri-business displays.
The Heart of Texas Cow/Calf Clinic is sponsored by Extension, Ag Texas Farm Credit Services, Federal Land Bank Association, Citizen’s National Bank, and Brownwood Chamber of Commerce.
Registration is $5 per person at the door. The fee covers a catered lunch.
