LUBBOCK – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the free North Region 4-H and FFA Species Clinic from 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. at the Texas Tech Animal Science Building in Lubbock.
The Animal and Food Science Building is at the intersection of Main and Indiana across from Spirit Arena.
The clinic, which is being organized by AgriLife Extension agents in Lubbock, Terry, Lamb and Dawson counties, is open to anyone.
Robert Scott, AgriLife Extension agent in Lubbock County, said the regional clinic is intended to provide an educational opportunity for new or experienced families participating in a youth livestock project. Beef, lamb, goat and swine will be the livestock species addressed during the clinic.
“The clinic’s main purpose is to teach the basic principles of livestock management as they relate to facilities, selection, nutrition, animal health, handling, showmanship and transportation,” Scott said.
“We will also spend time addressing Quality Assurance programs. Those programs are meant to ensure the safe and legal use of drugs or medications to facilitate the ethical care, development and exhibition of livestock.
“We strongly encourage parents and leaders to remember that livestock projects are to be used as tools in the process of youth development. It’s important to keep in mind that these youth are learning skills that will impact their entire lives and ultimately everyone around them.”
