Two equine clinics scheduled Feb. 24-25 in College Station

COLLEGE STATION – Two equine workshops conducted by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service are scheduled Feb. 24-25 in College Station.
A mare/foal workshop will be held from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Louis Pearce Pavilion on the Texas A&M University campus. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Topics and presenters include herd health and immunizations, Dr. Mike Martin, College of Veterinary Medicine, large animal clinical services; feeding broodmares and foals, Dr. Dennis Sigler, AgriLife Extension horse specialist; estrous cycle, Dr. Clay Cavinder, Texas A&M department of animal science; breeding management considerations for mare owners, Dr. Martha Vogelsang, Texas A&M department of animal science; foal health, Dr. Tracey Norman, Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, large animal clinical services; parturition, signs of foaling, Kelly Winsco, graduate student, Texas A&M department of animal science; and live demonstrations of preparation for breeding, breeding techniques and foal handling, Krissy Schroeder and department of animal science horse faculty.

A “Back to Basics” horse short course is scheduled Feb. 24-25 also at the Louis Pearce Pavilion.

Registration begins at 6 p.m. Feb. 24, and at 7 p.m., Sigler will present “Effective Round Pen Work for Starting the Young Performance Horse and Retraining the Older Horse.”
The workshop continues at 8 a.m. Feb. 25 with registration and the program beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 5 p.m.

Topics and presenters include herd health and immunizations, Martin; foot-care  basics for the horse owner, Jason Wilson-Maki, certified farrier, Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine; nutrition of the working horse, Dr. Josie Coverdale, Texas A&M department of animal science; selection of performance prospects, Cavinder; physical conditioning principles of horses, Vogelsang; and basic safety around horses, Teri Antilley, AgriLife Extension program specialist. Live training demonstrations will also be featured.

Online registration for either workshop is $40 through Feb. 18 and $60 at the door. To register for both workshops cost is is $70 through Feb. 18 and $100 at the door.
