SAN ANGELO – Plans are being finalized for the Commercial Sheep and Goat Producers Risk Management Workshop series in May and June in three Texas locations.
The workshops are meant to familiarize sheep and goat producers with the risk management tools now available to them, said Bill Thompson, Texas AgriLife Extension Service economist at San Angelo, and workshop coordinator.
“Producers have a pair of insurance-type risk management tools available to them they should consider taking advantage of, as well as several resources available through AgriLife Extension,” Thompson said.
The three workshops have similar curriculums and will last from 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. They are set for May 31 in Fredericksburg, June 5 in Brady and June 7 in Iraan. Specific meeting locations will be announced later.
The workshops are being sponsored by a service partnership comprised of AgriLife Extension, the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers’ Association, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Risk Management Agency and the American Sheep Industry Association.
“The workshops specifically target commercial producers though the information is applicable to producers with operations of any size,” Thompson said. “We are also organizing a related workshop series with the needs of small-acreage producers in mind.
“Prices paid for sheep and goats continue to be excellent and the future of the industry is bright. It is the partnership’s aim to educate producers and encourage them to incorporate risk management tools and strategies into their plans as they contemplate either expansion or drought recovery efforts.”
More specific information on the workshops will become available in coming months, he said.
