Bryan-College Station is once again proud to host the Texas 4-H Roundup, the pinnacle event for all of Texas 4-H. The community is gearing up for more than 4,000 participants who plan to visit the area for this event.
The event will be held June 10-14 on the campus of Texas A&M University. Texas 4-H Roundup consists of approximately 50 individual competitive events. The majority of these events require each individual or team to qualify at the county and district level. Roundup also offers 14 invitational style contests that allow intermediate and senior 4-H’ers to participate without having to qualify.
Other events will include a 4K for 4-H Walk to Run to promote healthy living, a 4-H Has Talent competition and evening assemblies to recognize contest winners and promote camaraderie among 4-H members. The Cody Johnson Band will also wrap up the week with a private Thursday evening performance at Reed Arena.
The 4K for 4-H Walk and Run will be open to the public on Thursday June 13. Registration information can be found at https://texas4h.webconnex.com/4Kfor4H. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. on the south side of Reed Arena and will cost $10. All proceeds will benefit the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program.
“We are excited to have over 4,000 youth and adults in College Station for this year’s 2013 Texas 4-H Roundup,” Kyle Merten, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service specialist – Texas 4-H and Youth Development. “4-H Roundup is Texas 4-H’s premiere leadership event of the year.”
A ribbon cutting for the event will take place June 11 at 9:30 a.m. at the AgriLife Center after a Texas 4-H Roundup VIP Appreciation Breakfast. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will also host the Texas 4-H Roundup Fightin’ Texas Aggie Festival which will begin the week-long festivities and showcase Texas A&M’s campus.
The youth who attend this event are able to learn leadership skills, team building and competition skills as well as get the opportunity to network with youth and adults and citizenship development.
This year, more than 200 4-H’ers will receive more than $2.2 million from 48 donors.
“The Texas 4-H Foundation will be giving away more than $2 million in scholarships to youth all across the state. Many of these youth will continue their education right here at Texas A&M University,” said Merten.
Each year contests are held throughout the counties in each of the 12 AgriLife Extension districts and at the state level. This event has been in College Station since its inception, 66 years ago, with the exception of 2012 when it was held in Lubbock.
The 4-H Trade Show will be the 4th annual event hosted by the Texas 4-H Friends & Alumni Association and is held in conjunction with Texas 4-H Roundup in Reed Arena. The Trade Show is expecting more than 50 vendors: college/universities, livestock associations, merchandise vendors, fundraising idea companies, awards/trophy businesses, apparel companies and more. This is an opportunity for youth and adults to visit with various organizations from across the state in one location and will provide 4-H members the arena to discuss higher learning opportunities and future career options. It’s also a great one-stop-shop for merchandise and keepsake items from the 2013 4-H Roundup.
