AUSTIN – “Beekeeping-101: Getting Started,” a new workshop being offered by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Travis County, will be held from 9 a.m.– 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the agency office, 1600-B Smith Road, Austin.
“This program is co‐presented by AgriLife Extension offices in Travis and Bastrop counties, said Julie Ansley, AgriLife Extension agent, Travis County. “It is for people who are interested in beekeeping, but have no idea where to start.”
Ansley said the program would consist of presentations on various topics relating to bees and beekeeping by several experts. Topics and presenters include:
— Bee Biology and Behavior – Wizzie Brown, AgriLife Extension program specialist, integrated pest management, Travis County.
— Tools of the Trade and Setting Up Your Hive, Jim Hogg, owner, Daddy’s Bees – Honeybee Removal Service, Hays/Travis counties.
— Bee Health – Bill Baxter, interim chief apiary inspector, Texas A&M University entomology department, College Station.
— Bee Forage – Fred Hall, AgriLife Extension agent, Williamson County.
— Tax Exemptions for Bees –Richard Michalski, Travis Central Appraisal District – Director Land, Austin.
Registration is $35 per person and includes lunch. Registration is via Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Conference Services at http://agriliferegister.tamu.edu. Type “Beekeeping” into the search box.
Class size is limited, so early registration is strongly encouraged, Ansley said.
The regular registration deadline is Oct.13. Late registration through conference services and on-site registration will be allowed, but the cost will be $45. No cash will be accepted.
