SAN ANGELO – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Tom Green County has set an organizational 4-H youth archery club meeting for 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Tom Green County 4-H Building, located on U.S. Highway 67 just east of San Angelo.
Those unable to attend the meeting can still enroll online at http://Texas.4honline.com. Individual enrollment is $20. For more information, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Tom Green County at 325-659-6523 or Mark Barta, the archery club manager, at 325-277-3064.
“Archery is the rising star in West Texas youth shooting sports,” said Courtney Redman, AgriLife Extension 4-H agent in Tom Green County. “This meeting is meant to let 4-H members and their parents meet Mark Barta, our new club manager, and get acquainted with the sport and the direction the club might take.”
Redman said Barta is a lifelong archer who has participated in all types of archery. He is president of the Concho Valley Archery Association and a certified 4-H archery coach. He was instructed in archery at the University of Texas at Austin. He and members of the Concho Valley Archery Association will serve as club instructors.
“Archery has been part of the 4-H shooting sports project since the beginning, but is now experiencing renewed interest as there are currently many archery matches held throughout the state,” Redman said. “It’s also quite a multi-faceted sport, offering participants everything from target archery and field shooting to hunting and bow-fishing. It’s also not as physically taxing as some other sports, so it’s one activity that could last a lifetime.”
