AgriLife Extension healthy cooking school in San Antonio will offer fun and healthful food
SAN ANTONIO — A Dinner Tonight! Healthy Cooking School will be presented from 6-8:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the San Antonio Garden Center, 3310 N. New Braunfels, San Antonio.
The school is being presented by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Prairie View A&M University Cooperative Extension Program.
“When dining out, there is a tendency to choose foods higher in calories, and large portions have become more common,” said Dr. Connie Sheppard, AgriLife Extension agent for family and consumer sciences, Bexar County. “At-home family dining is becoming a lost art and many people are overwhelmed when they think of menu planning and preparing healthy, cost-effective meals for themselves and their families.”
Dinner Tonight! Healthy Cooking Schools were developed with the purpose of bringing people together in a fun environment to learn about healthy meal planning and preparation, she said.
“With a little guidance and planning, making home-cooked meals can be easy, nutritious and inexpensive,” Sheppard said. “We also show people how to make their favorite recipes healthier by using alternative lower fat and lower calorie ingredients.”
She said the cooking school in San Antonio will feature demonstrations on how to cook easy dishes. In addition, tasting areas will be set up so attendees can try recipes and speak with AgriLife Extension staff and chefs about menu items using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients.
“The featured chef for this cooking school will be from the Texas Beef Council,” Sheppard said. San Antonio Herb Market and other vendors will also be participating.
Cost is $15. Participants receive a Dinner Tonight! cookbook, goodie bag, food samples and more. To register, go to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Conference Services website at http://agriliferegister.tamu.edu or call 979-845-2604.
Families can sign up to receive weekly emails announcing new Dinner Tonight! recipes by contacting Sheppard at 210-467-6575 or c-sheppard@tamu.edu.
