SEGUIN — Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority and Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board will present two homeowner septic system workshops on Nov. 10 and 11 in Seguin.
The first will be a general “Homeowner Maintenance of Septic Systems Course” from 6-8 p.m. Nov 10. The second will be an in-depth class on aerobic systems from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Nov. 11.
Both classes are free and will be presented at the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority’s River Annex, 905 Nolan Street in Seguin.
“The two-hour program will provide a basic understanding of the operational and maintenance activities of conventional and aerobic septic systems,” said Ward Ling, AgriLife Extension program specialist, College Station.
Ling said topics covered will include treatment processes, health and safety considerations, how to inspect and maintain the system, and instruction on how activities in the home can affect the system.
“The course provides answers to some of the most frequently asked questions, including when to pump out a tank, and what can and cannot go down the drain,” he said.
He said homeowners wanting more information on aerobic systems may attend the program the following day.
“The six-hour course covers the same material as the two-hour course the evening before, but goes into more depth on aerobic systems and their operation and maintenance,” he said. “In addition, attendees of this class will receive certification to maintain their own systems.”
In Guadalupe County, homeowners with aerobic systems are required to have a maintenance contract with a licensed service provider for two years after installation, Ling noted. After that time, the homeowner must continue to have their system under a maintenance contract — or they may obtain certification to maintain their own system.
Seating is limited, so registration is required to reserve a seat. To register for either class, contact Ling at 979-845-6980 or wling@ag.tamu.edu.For more information, go to http://www.geronimocreek.org/
Funding for these classes is provided through a federal Clean Water Act grant to AgriLife Extension, administered by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
