SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Bexar County Beef Cattle Committee will present this year’s South Texas Beef Cattle Short Course on Jan. 8, 15 and 22.
All short course sessions will be held at the Auxiliary Services Auditorium of Texas A&M University — San Antonio, located at One University Way in south San Antonio.
“Short course presentations will be on three consecutive Thursday evenings in January and will cover various topics of interest and concern to beef cattle producers and others associated with the beef cattle industry,” said Roy Flora, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources, Bexar County and a program coordinator.
Registration for each evening program is 6 p.m., with presentations to begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. For more information and to RSVP for each session, contact Angel Torres at the AgriLife Extension office for Bexar County at 210-467-6575. The cost is $15 per session.
The topics of the Jan. 8 program, which requires an RSVP by Jan. 6, will be laws and regulations, plus controloptions and management of feral hogs. Presenters will be Vic Alexander, lead inspector, U.S. Department of Agriculture, San Antonio, and Leroy Moczygemba, hog trapper and Bexar County Beef Cattle Committee member.
Attendees of the laws and regulations portion will receive one Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education credit in laws and regulations. Those attending the feral hog control portion will receive one general credit.
The Jan.15 program, which requires an RSVP by Jan. 13, will be a presentation on the effects of proper nutrition and wildlife on beef cattle by Dr. Rick Machen, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Uvalde.
Session attendees will receive one integrated pest management and one general continuing education unit.
The program on Jan. 22, which requires an RSVP by Jan. 20, will address the future of cattle marketing and common brush-management mistakes, including those in controlling forage and cedar control. Dr. Rob Hogan, AgriLife Extension economist, and Dr. Bob Lyons, AgriLife Extension brush specialist, both of Uvalde, will be the presenters.
Attendees receive one general continuing education unit for the cattle marketing portion of the session and one integrated pest management unit for the brush-management potion.
The short course is a collaboration of AgriLife Extension, Bexar County Beef Cattle Committee, Texas A&M University – San Antonio and Capital Farm Credit.
