SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Bexar County is presenting the new Back to Basics/Backyard Gardening series program, “The Basics of Home Brewing – 101,” on Jan. 14 in San Antonio.
The program will be held from6:30-8:30 p.m. at Blue Star Brewing in the Blue Star Arts Complex, 1414 S. Alamo St. The registration is $20 and attendees must be 21 years of age or older.
“For the novice, brewing your own beer at home is easy, inexpensive, fun and will most likely produce a brew superior to what you get from a can,” said David Rodriguez, AgriLife Extension horticulturist for Bexar County and program coordinator. “In this program, we’ll lay out the basics of brewing at home and the supplies needed, plus do a brewing process walkthrough.”
Rodriguez said program presenters will include Joey Villarreal, proprietor and brewer, Blue Star Brewing Company; Todd Huntress, homebrewer and operator of San Antonio Homebrew Supply; and homebrewer and Bexar County Master Gardener Lou Kellogg.
“Blue Star Brewing Company was founded by entrepreneur and restaurateur Joey Villarreal and his wife Magdalena,” Rodriguez said. “Joey majored in biology at the University of Texas — San Antonio where he first encountered homebrewing.
“Todd Huntress’ job is to talk about beer and the brewing process. And lately, he’s been talking to a greater number of people interested in brewing their own sudsy concoctions at home.”
Rodriguez added that Kellogg is an enthusiastic homebrewer who has been making beers and ales at home for many years.
“We will have door prize drawings and samplings of local organic brews at the program,” he said. “Space is limited, so we recommend attendees RSVP early to ensure a spot.”
