AUSTIN — The Travis County Master Gardeners will present “Growing Fruit in Your Home Garden” from 10 a.m.-noon Jan. 10 at the Zilker Botanical Garden, 2220 Barton Springs Road in Austin.
The Travis County Master Gardener program is a volunteer program of the Travis County office of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, part of the Texas A&M University System.
The seminar is free, but park admission is $2 per adult, $1 per child or senior, and $3 for non-Austin residents.
“January is a good time to plant trees, so come learn how to grow fruit trees in your home garden,” said Daphne Richards, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist for Travis County. “The trees we’ll discuss at the program include peaches, plums, pears, figs and apples. We also will discuss growing blackberries and grapes.”
Richards said the program will cover the basics on how to plant a tree and which fruit varieties excel in the Central Texas area.
“Master Gardener Joe Posern is a fruit specialist and has been growing fruit in Austin since 2007,” Richards said. “He will be sharing his wealth of experience with attendees.”
She added that the program is in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability of the city of Austin.
