MARFA – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the High Country Beef and Range Management Update from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. May 6 at the Marfa National Bank, 301 S. Highland Ave. in Marfa.
The multi-county program will be conducted by AgriLife Extension offices in Presidio and Brewster/Jeff Davis counties.
“With cattle prices still tapping the stratosphere, it’s not hard to get ranch people excited about the industry,” said Logan Boswell, AgriLife Extension agent in Brewster and Jeff Davis counties. “With that in mind, we’ve planned this update with some topics usually not heard at similar programs, such as the pros and cons of buying or raising replacement females or the cost and options associated with live cover breeding versus artificial insemination.”
Individual registration is $10 due upon arrival, but those planning to attend should RSVP by May 1. To RSVP or for more information, call the AgriLife Extension office in Presidio County at 432-729-4746 or Brewster/Jeff Davis counties at 432-837-6207. Lunch will be sponsored by Capital Farm Credit.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units – one integrated pest management and two general – will be offered.
Topics and speakers will include:
– Broadleaf Weed Control, Timing of Mesquite and Other Brush Herbicide Applications, and Brush Control Methods, Dr. Alyson McDonald, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Fort Stockton.
– Retained versus Store Bought Cows: What’s the Difference? Rob Hogan, AgriLife Extension economist, Uvalde.
– Plant ID, Boswell, McDonald and Jesse Schneider, AgriLife Extension agent in Marfa County.
– What’s a Pregnancy Cost? What are the Options?, and Horn Flies and Management, Dr. Bruce Carpenter, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Fort Stockton.
