JUNCTION – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the Living Waters Conference from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 4 at the Texas Tech University Center at Junction, 254 Red Raider Lane in Junction.
Registration is from 8-9 a.m., followed by the Lone Star Healthy Streams program until noon when the conference breaks for a catered lunch. After lunch the conference will reconvene into three outside rotational meetings, said Sam Silvers, AgriLife Extension agent in Kimble County.
“With Kimble County being known as the land of living waters, this workshop fits hand in hand with our area,” Silvers said. “Producers and landowners within the western Hill Country must stay abreast with new techniques for managing watersheds and riparian areas, and it is the goal of this conference to help them achieve that.
“A highlight during this year’s conference will be a new one-of-a-kind stream trailer that will be onsite to demonstrate surface-groundwater interaction. So we invite anyone interested in proper land and water management to come join us on the banks of the South Llano River for a unique educational experience.”
The morning Lone Star Healthy Streams topics and speakers will include:
– Feral Hogs, Dr. Jim Cathey, associate department head of the wildlife and fisheries department and AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist at Texas A&M University, College Station.
– Beef, Dr. Larry Redmon, AgriLife Extension state forage specialist, College Station.
The afternoon rotational session topics and speakers will include:
– Riparian Vegetation, Plant Identification and Structures, Dr. Barron Rector AgriLife Extension range specialist, College Station.
– Rangeland Monitoring to Benefit Wildlife, Cathey.
– Trailer Geology/Surface Groundwater Interaction, Dr. Alyson McDonald, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Fort Stockton.
– Ecological Benefits of Brush Management, Dr. Bob Lyons, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Uvalde.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units – one laws and regulations and two general – will be offered.
Individual registration is $30 by May 29 and $35 thereafter. For more information and to RSVP, contact Silvers at 325-446-2620, gssilvers@ag.tamu.edu .
