MULESHOE – A Small Grains Conference will be held Aug. 18 by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Bailey County for all area small grains producers.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the program following from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Bailey County Electric Cooperative, 610 E. American Blvd. in Muleshoe.
“Many producers in the area are diversifying their operations with small grains, either for silage, grazing or for grain production,” said Curtis Preston, AgriLife Extension agent in Bailey County. “We need to make sure that producers have the tools they need to be successful.”
Wheat, triticale and barley will be the crops covered. Barley is making a “comeback” in the southern High Plains for many reasons, such as the grain feeding value and an area market for barley grain, Preston said.
Topics include variety selection, weed management and disease management, along with other information related to small grain production. Dr. Calvin Trostle, AgriLife Extension agronomist from Lubbock, will be the speaker for the event.
Two Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education credits – one general and one integrated pest management – will be available, Preston said.
A $10 registration fee will be payable at the door. For more information contact the AgriLife Extension office in Bailey County at 806-272-4583.
