CANYON – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s 39th annual Randall County Ag Show and Crops Tour is scheduled for Sept. 22 in Canyon, according to Dr. J. D. Ragland, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resource agent, Randall County.
Registration, coffee and donuts will begin at 8:30 a.m., sponsored by Plains Land Bank of Amarillo. The morning portion will be in the Kuhlman Extension Center, AgriLife Extension’s office for Randall County at 200 N. Brown Road.
The program is free and sponsored by Happy State Bank. The morning program, starting at 9 a.m., includes:
– Beefing Up Your Stocker Cattle Management Plan, Dr. Ted McCollum, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist, Amarillo.
– Sugarcane Aphid and Hedgehog Insect Update, Dr. Ed Bynum, AgriLife Extension entomologist, Amarillo.
– Weed Control in Native Pastures, Tim Steffens, West Texas A&M University and AgriLife Extension range specialist, Amarillo.
– Farm Bill Sign Up – Final Results and Summary, Dr. Steve Amosson, AgriLife Extension economist, and DeDe Jones, AgriLife Extension risk management specialist, Amarillo.
– Veterinarian Feed Additive Direct Initiative, Dr. Tom Protillo, Friona Industries veterinarian, Friona.
The noon luncheon will include an awards program and a presentation, Cattle/Grain Markets and Their Relationships Towards Future Outlook, by Duane Lenz, general manager and marketing analyst from CattleFax, Centennial, Colorado. The luncheon is sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank.
The afternoon tour on a bus provided by the Palo Duro Soil and Water Conservation District will begin at 2 p.m., after participants view agricultural equipment displays and presentations outside of the Kuhlman Extension Center.
Tour stops will include:
– Grass Control in Grain Sorghum with the Inzen Trait, Jim Fischbacher farm, 1.5 miles north of Canyon at the intersection of Soncy and Country Club roads. It is the field on the east side.
– Sorghum Variety Trial, Greg Glover farm, 1 mile west of the intersection at Soncy and Farm-to-Market 2219 roads at Helium Road. The field is on the south side.
– Bushland Forage Sorghum Trial, 100 hybrids on the Michael Menke farm, west on Interstate 40, exit at Arnot Road, head west on frontage 1 mile to Hill Road, and the plots are on the west side.
The bus will return to the AgriLife Extension office by 5:30 p.m.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units – one in drift minimization, one integrated pest management and one general – will be available to private applicators attending the event.
