DUBLIN, Texas – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present its Southwest Dairy Day Oct. 22 near Dublin.
This year’s dairy day will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Postmus Organic Farms, 2855 County Road 310.
“The Postmus family has graciously agreed to host this year’s dairy day by letting us use their organic dairy operation as the venue for the event,” said Dr. Ellen Jordan, AgriLife Extension dairy specialist based in Dallas and event coordinator. “It will not only be educational for those involved in the dairy industry; there will be activities the whole family can enjoy.”
Jordan said the Postmus dairy is an organic dairy with a New Zealand-style open-sided parlor for the operation’s approximately 1,400 milking cows.
She said during dairy tours attendees will learn about irrigated pasture management, irrigating with electric fencing, fly-vacuum systems and free stall barns.
AgriLife Extension personnel participating in Southwest Dairy Day will include Jordan; Dr. Doug Steele, AgriLife Extension director, College Station; Ron Woolley, regional program leader for the agency’s Central Region, Stephenville; Dr. Vanessa Corriher-Olson, forage specialist, Overton; Dr. Dana Porter, irrigation specialist, Lubbock; and agriculture agents from Archer, Bosque, Comanche, Erath, Hamilton and McLennan counties.
Jordan said there also will be demonstrations on maintaining the irrigation system, nutrient and fertilizer management on the dairy, and manure-vacuum maintenance for which two Dairy Outreach Program Area continuing education units will be offered.
Lunch will be provided courtesy of Hi-Pro Feeds, and dairy products will be available for sampling at the event.
“We’ll also have booth exhibits where those in industries allied with dairy farming will display their products and show the latest technology,” Jordan said.
