SAN ANTONIO — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present its Backyard Basics Expo from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the San Antonio College Oppenheimer Academic Center, 1819 N. Main Ave. in San Antonio.
The center is located near the corner of West Evergreen and East Maverick streets.
The cost is $20 per person before the event date and $25 on-site.
Parking is free, as are youth activities offered during the expo. There also will be free drawings at the close of the expo.
“The expo is being held in cooperation with the William R. Sinkin Eco Centro, a community outreach center for environmental sustainability operated by San Antonio College,” said David Rodriguez, event coordinator and AgriLife Extension agent for horticulture, Bexar County.
Rodriguez said the Backyard Basics program of AgriLife Extension emphasizes self-reliance and nutrition through the production, preparation and preservation of homemade and homegrown foods.
Workshop sessions will include beekeeping basics, backyard chickens, composting, turf management, urban wildlife, keeping fresh foods safe, herb gardening, home aquaponics and vegetable gardening.
Sessions will run concurrently from 9:30-10:15 a.m., 10:30-11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
“There will also be a number of vendors at the expo who will show their goods and services,” Rodriguez said. “We will also have a Bexar County Master Gardeners information table and plant sale, and other items will be available for purchase. And there will be practical hands-on demonstrations on vermiculture, drip irrigation and building a rain barrel.”
