VAN HORN – As part of the state’s increased chronic wasting disease or CWD, surveillance efforts, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas Animal Health Commission have partnered to conduct postmortem sample collector trainings in Van Horn on Oct. 5 and Amarillo on Oct. 13.
The meetings are free, but space is limited to the first 50 participants at each training.
The Van Horn meeting will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Van Horn Convention Center, 1801 W. Broadway St. Contact Lainie Koch, AgriLife Extension agent in Culberson County, at 432-283-8440, jekoch@ag.tamu.edu for more information.
The Amarillo meeting is set from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at 6500 W. Amarillo Blvd. Lunch and snacks will be provided. For more information, contact Michael Wilkes, AgriLife Extension agent in Roberts County, at 806-868-3191, mcwilkes@ag.tamu.edu.
Dr. John Tomecek, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist at San Angelo, said the sessions will be a classroom format with hands-on training for sample collection.
“Those who have gone through one of these training sessions will be able to take samples from harvested deer or elk on their properties and submit those samples to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for CWD testing to meet the mandatory testing requirement now in place in the Trans-Pecos and Panhandle CWD Zones,” Tomecek said.
