COLLEGE STATION – Dr. Murray Milford, professor and associate head for academic programs with the soil and crop sciences department at Texas A&M University, will retire Feb. 28 after more than 36 years of service.
During those years Milford has taught almost 18,000 students in Agronomy 301, and more than 1,100 graduate students have passed through the department with Milford serving as their graduate advisor.
Many of the current faculty have graduate degrees, with Milford serving as their graduate advisor.
“I’ve been truly blessed to have had the opportunity to return to my alma mater as a member of its faculty and to have had all of the opportunities that it has provided, especially the interaction with the thousands of students and hundreds of staff and faculty,” Milford said.
“To have as much fun as I’ve had while feeling a sense of accomplishment and making a living at the same time, it’s just too much to imagine, much less to have experienced.”
Milford has served on numerous committees in professional scientific and honor societies, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the university. He was Speaker for the Faculty Senate in 1984-85.
A retirement and recognition dinner is planned for Murray and his wife, Marsha, at 6:30 p.m. March 30 at the Kurten Community Center. Cost of the dinner is $10. Reservations must be received by March 23, 2001.
For those not able to attend the evening function, there will be a retirement reception from 1:30-3:30 p.m. March 19 in the Forsyth Galleries of the Memorial Student Center on campus. Cake and punch will be served.
The Milfords have requested rather than a gift, those wishing to do so may contribute to the Murray H. and Marsha A. Milford Endowed Fund. Checks should be made payable to the Texas A&M Foundation and sent to the Foundation office.
Those wishing to write letters to the Milfords may write or print them in size 10 type or larger and send them, unfolded, for inclusion in a notebook.
These should be sent to Carol J. Rhodes, Texas A&M University, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, 370 Olsen Blvd., College Station, Texas, 77843-2474, no later than March 23.
