SAN ANGELO – Super juniper-eating goats and range ripping are only two of many topics slated for this year’s 30th Annual Sheep and Goat Field Day Sept. 4 at the Texas A&M University System Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
The center is north of San Angelo on U.S. Highway 87. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by a field tour at 9:30 a.m.
The morning’s six-stop tour features presentations on such topics as juniper-eating goats, range ripping, wool measuring instruments, salt cedar, and superior genetics in Texas Rambouillet sheep. Participants can also take advantage of a health screening that will run concurrently with the rest of the morning tour. The screening is being coordinated by Noemi Samaniego, Health Education for Rural Outreach (HERO) specialist at the center.
After a catered lunch, the program begins at 1 p.m. with a presentation on Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) and industry updates from the Mohair Council of America; National Sheep Industry Improvement Center; Ranchers’ Lamb of Texas, Inc.; Texas Wildlife Damage Management Service, and the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers’ Association.
