COLLEGE STATION The Texas A&M University Horticulture Club team placed first at the Southern Region American Society for Horticultural Science, according to Dr. Dan Lineberger, horticulture professor and club advisor.
The group competed against students from six other universities at this month’s event in Florida.
The team also won first place in two divisions: “vegetable crops,” and “greenhouse, florals and foliage.” The team nabbed second in the woody ornamentals and the fruit and nut crop divisions.
Team members are junior Logan Barton of Yoakum; senior David Etzler of Kingsville; senior Lindsey Rakowitz of Pleasanton; sophomore Elizabeth Pappenfort of Quitman; junior L.B. Martin of Athens; junior Monica Robinson of Flatonia; and sophomore Jeremy Stavinoha of La Vernia.
Barton also won second place individual overall and first place in woody ornamentals; Rokowitz won second place in greenhouse, floral and foliage competition; and Stavinoha took second place in the vegetable crops contest.
Clubs from Oklahoma State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Arkansas State University, Texas Tech University, Murray State University and Mississippi State University competed.
