BEAUMONT – “New Technology: Adoption & Benefits” is the theme for the 64th annual field day for Texas AgriLife Research-Beaumont, 1509 Aggie Dr.
The July 14 event begins with field tours at 8 a.m. followed by an indoor program at 10:45 a.m. Afternoon field tours will begin at 1 p.m. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Dr. Ted Wilson, center director, will open the program with an overview of
the facility’s research. Speakers include Dr. John Greenplate, Monsanto Science Fellow,
Monsanto Co.; Dr. Johnny Saichuk, professor, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center; and Cliff Mock, Texas crop consultant and hybrid rice-seed producer.
Greenplate will address novel research involving the development of insect, disease and herbicide resistant/tolerant varieties. Saichuk and Mock will give their perspectives on how to manage weeds, insects and diseases to maximize profitability and how to manage herbicide-resistant rice.
The morning tour stops will showcase recent developments in rice breeding,
photosynthesis research on improving inbred and hybrid varieties, rice physiology, rice fertility, rice insect and disease management, and rice quality and molecular genetics. Afternoon tours will include organic rice and biofuels crops.
Texas Department of Agriculture licensed private, commercial and non-commercial pesticide applicators participating in the field day may obtain three general continuing education credits toward recertification.
