AgriLife Extension to present Jan. 21 Backyard Gardening program on growing pecans

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present its Backyard Gardening series program “Growing Pecans” from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  Jan. 21 at the AgriLife Extension office for Bexar County, Suite 208 of Conroy Square, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive in San Antonio.

Dr. Larry Stein, professor and AgriLife Extension horticulturist in Uvalde, will be the program’s featured speaker.

“Dr. Stein is known for his expertise on pecans and will be giving a presentation that will include a short history of Texas pecans and an introduction into different varieties of pecan seedlings,” said David Rodriguez, AgriLife Extension horticulturist for Bexar County. “He will also address whether it’s best to use bare root or container planting, as well as how and where to plant the pecan tree that will produce best for your area.”

The program will be beneficial to both homeowners and small-acreage pecan producers, Rodriguez noted.

“During this program, I will make specific recommendations to people as to which pecan varieties might be best, as well as discuss management of pecan plants so they can grow fast and begin to produce in from four to five years,” Stein said.

“Another thing that will be emphasized in the program will be the health benefits of pecans,” he said. “Pecans are high in fiber and contain antioxidants. They are also good for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Of course, during this time of year, it’s necessary to remind people that you get the optimal health benefits when you eat the pecan meat alone — not as part of a pecan pie.”

The registration fee is $12 and attendees are requested to RSVP to Angel Torres at 210-467-6575 or, but at-the-door registration will also be accepted.
