COLLEGE STATION – Dr. Robert Sprowls, Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory resident director in Amarillo, has been honored with the Texas A&M AgriLife Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence for Service, specifically Diagnostic Services.
The award was presented Jan. 9 during the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Centennial Conference in College Station. The Vice Chancellor’s Awards in Excellence were established in 1980 to recognize commitment and outstanding contributions by Texas A&M AgriLife faculty and staff throughout Texas and provide an opportunity to celebrate their achievements.
In her nomination of Sprowls, Dr. Tammy Beckham, director of Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, said Sprowls has brought recognition and respect to himself and the laboratorythrough his regional, statewide and national service, and “we are fortunate to have him on our staff.”
Sprowls, who has spent the past 38 years with the organization, started as a pathologist and quickly rose to become the region’s foremost expert on livestock diagnostics and the clear leader of the Amarillo laboratory, Beckham said in the nomination.
She continued, saying Sprowls’ high regard related to cattle diagnostics from industry stakeholders, agencies and producers throughout Texas and the U.S. is because of his “innate ability to see the bigger picture of a clinical situation and effectively apply appropriate diagnostic knowledge and techniques.
“His work requires interaction with some of the largest feedlots in the world, in addition to smaller producers, ranchers and cattle owners across the region,” she said. “His skills as a diagnostician, pathologist and leader have allowed him to succeed in this complex role.”
