HUGHES SPRINGS—Area residents interested in protecting Lake O’ the Pines water quality are invited to a meeting April 2 in Hughes Springs.
The meeting will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Northeast Texas Municipal Water District’s executive office, 4180 Farm-to-Market Road 250, according to Lucas Gregory, a project specialist for the Texas Water Resources Institute.
The institute is part of Texas A&M AgriLife Research, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University.
Gregory said meeting organizers will provide an overview of a plan to improve and protect the lake’s water quality.
“We will discuss updates and revisions … to the plan established in 2008 to improve in-lake dissolved oxygen levels by reducing pollution in the Lake O’ the Pines watershed,” Gregory said.
Nikki Dictson, an AgriLife Extension program specialist with the institute, said implementation plans and actions included in the plan need to be periodically revisited to ensure that they are still appropriate.
Gregory said after organizers present proposed changes to the plan and any comments are discussed, they will seek consensus approval of the implementation plan from watershed stakeholders.
“If agreed upon by watershed stakeholders, the implementation plan will then be delivered to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for its initial review,” Gregory said.
