SEGUIN — A Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed Partnership meeting will be held the evening of June 10 at the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority’s River Annex located at 905 Nolan St. in Seguin.
The meeting is open to the public, but will focus on area farmers and ranchers. It is presented by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the river authority in conjunction with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board.
Refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m., with the meeting to begin at 6 p.m.
After a welcome and introduction by Debbie Magin of the Guadalupe-Blanco
River Authority, Seguin, meeting topics and speakers will include:
— A recap of the annual clean-up event and other activities, plus updates on future events, Ward Ling, Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed coordinator.
— An overview of an agricultural water quality management plan (WQMP), Joseph McIntosh, Comal-Guadalupe Soil and Water Conservation District.
— An overview of the Guadalupe Master Gardener Program, Cindy Martin, Master Gardener, Guadalupe County Master Gardeners.
“Along with recent accomplishments of the partnership, particularly the clean-up event held last month, there will also be discussion about the last round of homeowner septic system classes and talk about the classes we will offer this November,” Ling said.
McIntosh will explain how his work helps protect area creeks by working with area farmers and ranchers to implement recommended practices. Some of the practices include prescribed grazing, watering facilities, pipelines, grassed waterways, pasture/hayland/rangeland planting and riparian buffers.
“There is no cost to the landowner for development of a WQMP,” McIntosh said. “However, there may be costs for implementing certain practices, but financial assistance is available in most cases.”
The Guadalupe County Master Gardener program is a thriving organization of volunteers dedicated to learning and sharing their knowledge of gardening, lawn, tree, and shrub care with others, said Bob Teweles, association president.
“If you want to become part of our county Master Gardener organization, we are now open for enrollment for our fall training program. We’ll have more information at the meeting on how you can get involved with the local chapter,” Teweles said.
