SAN ANTONIO – Three Backyard Basics programs of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service – two in San Antonio and one in New Braunfels — will be held in October, said program coordinators.
The two San Antonio programs will be held at the AgriLife Extension office for Bexar County, located in Suite 208 of the Conroy Square business complex, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive in San Antonio. The New Braunfels program will be held at the AgriLife Extension office for Comal County at 325 Resource Drive.
The locations, names, times and costs of the Backyard Basics programs are:
— San Antonio, Growing Herbs, 1:30-3:30 p.m. Oct. 20. This workshop will discuss what herbs grow best in Central Texas and how to use them for cooking and in other ways. This program will be presented by Don Crites, Bexar County Master Gardener and Bexar County Master Wellness volunteer.

– San Antonio, Home Aquaponics, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 21. Steven Sumrow from Aquaponic Systems, USA will explain how to create a home aquaponics system in which to grow plants and vegetables in a water environment with tropical and other fish.

– New Braunfels, Soft Cheeses at Home, 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 28. This workshop will show attendees how to make their own mozzarella cheese at home. Participants will take home their own sample of homemade cheese.

Additionally, Dr. Connie Sheppard and Roy Flora, AgriLife Extension agents for Bexar County, are looking for adult volunteers willing to serve on a Backyard Basics Task Force. The task force will be charged with reviewing and selecting new Backyard Basics topics, conference planning and outreach to new audiences.
Sheppard and Flora said the task force will meet in the San Antonio area three or four times per year, with meeting days, times and locations to be decided by the majority of the group.
