VERNON – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Hardeman County Wheat Field Tour will be held at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Chillicothe Station on May 13.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the program will conclude with lunch at 11:50 a.m., according to Steven Sparkman, AgriLife Extension agent for Hardeman County.
There will be a $10 registration fee. Three Texas Department of Agriculture private, commercial and non-commercial pesticide applicator continuing education units – one integrated pest management and two general – will be offered.
Tour stops and speakers will include:
– Wheat variety trials, Dr. Clark Neely, AgriLife Extension state small grains and oilseeds specialist in College Station, and Dr. Emi Kimura, AgriLife Extension agronomist in Vernon.
– 2015 wheat crop status and outlook, Neely.
– Crop rotation options, guar/sorghum/canola, Dr. Paul DeLaune, AgriLife Research environmental soil scientist in Vernon.
– Tillage and irrigation management of guar, DeLaune.
The program will move inside from 10:45-11:45 a.m. for a presentation on the Gateway Groundwater Conservation District by Sparkman and a discussion on guar opportunities by Dr. Lewis Norman and Dr. Ryan Norman, both with United Guar in Houston.
