Topics will range from honey production to agricultural drones

LULING – The 88th annual Luling Foundation Field Day will be held May 21 in the Luling Foundation Demonstration Barn, 523 S. Mulberry St. in Luling.
The field day is free and open to the public, and will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. followed by the program from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., said Mike Kuck, the foundation’s farm manager.
There will be a complimentary breakfast served as well as a catered lunch, Kuck said.
“This event will be a great opportunity for people of all levels of agricultural experience to get information on topics ranging from bees and honey production to agriculture drones, and food safety to pasture management,” said Michael Haynes, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent for agriculture and natural resources, Caldwell County.
Speakers will include AgriLife Extension and Texas A&M AgriLife Research experts, Kuck said.
At 8:30 a.m., participants will board a hay trailer for farm tours, which will include the following speakers and topics:
— Honey Bees, Molly Keck, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management specialist for Bexar County.
— Drone Use in Agriculture, Dr. Juan Landivar, AgriLife Research, Corpus Christi.
— Trailer Inspections, Kenny Murchison, Travis County Sheriff’s Department.
— Cattle Industry Dynamics, Dr. Rick Machen, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Uvalde.
— Pasture Weed Management, Dr. Josh McGinty, AgriLife Extension agronomist, Corpus Christi.
— Food Safety: Food versus Fear, Dr. Matthew Taylor, AgriLife Research microbiologist, College Station.
Haynes said three hours of Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units – two general, one laws and regulations — will be available for event attendees.
Post-field day equipment demonstrations will begin at 3 p.m. for attendees wanting further instruction, Kuck said.
The Luling Foundation was established in 1927 by Edgar B. Davis to teach diversity in agriculture and improve the lives of farm and ranch families in Caldwell, Gonzales, and Guadalupe counties, according to the foundation’s website at http://www.lulingfoundation.org/. Since it’s inception, the foundation has a history of cooperation and support with Texas A&M University.
