SAN SABA – A mix of topics ranging from pecan tree management to fire ecology will be offered during the San Saba County Conservation Expo set from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. July 16 at the San Saba Civic Center in San Saba.
Neal Alexander, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent in San Saba County, said the educational program is a collaborative effort of the Central Texas Conservation Partnership, which includes his agency and a number of others that serve producers throughout Central Texas.
“This program will have quite a varied range of topics, all tailored to our West Central Texas region,” Alexander said. “The topics are gleaned from those we regularly address in our respective agencies, so this would be a prime opportunity for regional producers to get a lot of information at one location. We will start with registration at 8 a.m. and follow with the program at 9 a.m.”
Topics and speakers will include:
– General Pecan Tree Management: Yard Trees to Small Orchards, Dr. Larry Stein, AgriLife Extension horticulturist, Uvalde.
– Oak Wilt and Drought Issues, Dr. David Appel, AgriLife Extension plant pathologist, College Station.
– Ranching 101, The Basics, Grant Teplicek, U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service grazing lands specialist, San Angelo.
– Managing Grazing Lands for both Wildlife and Livestock, Dr. John Tomecek, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist, San Angelo.
– Fire Ecology, Dr. Morgan Russell, AgriLife Extension range specialist, San Angelo.
Individual preregistration is $20 by July 10 and $30 thereafter. The fee includes lunch. For more information and to preregister, call the AgriLife Extension office in San Saba at 325-372-5416.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units, one general and two integrated pest management, will be offered.
