AUSTIN – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present programs on raising backyard chickens Aug. 6 in Austin and San Marcos.
The programs are part of AgriLife Extension’s Backyard Basics initiative, which promotes healthy living through home-based food production, preparation and preservation.
One of these programs — Backyard Chickens — will be from held from 10 a.m.– noon at the AgriLife Extension office for Travis County, 1600-B Smith Road in southeast Austin.
“During the program, attendees will learn from Travis County Master Gardener Ally Stresing about the various egg-laying chicken breeds, how to care for chicks, diets for producing delicious eggs and keeping the coop clean,” said Daphne Richards, AgriLife Extension horticulturist for Travis County and program coordinator. “This instructive program will show you how to get started raising a home flock.”

Also on Aug. 6, the AgriLife Extension office for Hays County will present a Backyard Poultry program from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in their office at 1253 Civic Center Loop in San Marcos.
“This program will be presented by avid local birder Jesse Huth, who will talk about the various chicken breeds and their characteristics, as well as their housing, health and nutrition,” said Richard Parrish, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources in Hays County.
