KRESS – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Swisher County Ag Committee will conduct a Corn and Sorghum Field Day beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 3 near Kress.
John Villalba, AgriLife Extension agent in Swisher County, said participants should meet at the Swisher County Co-op Gin located 1.5 miles east of Kress on Farm-to-Market Road 145.
Participants will then travel to the Cody Gruhlkey Farm to view dryland corn and sorghum plots, which will be followed by a move to the Klepper Farm to view early and mid-season sorghum variety trials.
A lunch sponsored by Texas Corn Producers will be served at the Reed Farm Headquarters, three and a half miles east of Kress on Farm-to-Market Road 145. There, participants will hear updates from the Texas Corn Producers and Texas Sorghum Producers grower organizations.
“Dr. Ed Bynum, AgriLife Extension entomologist at Amarillo, will also present a program updating attendees on the status of the sugarcane aphid in the area,” Villalba said. “From the Reed Farm, we’ll travel to stop three on Dunn Farms. Fields at this stop will include drip and center pivot irrigated corn, which are utilizing carbohydrate feeding technologies.”
Individual registration is $10. For more information and to RSVP by Aug. 31, call the AgriLife Extension office in Swisher County at 806-995-3726.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units — two drift management and one integrated pest management — will be offered.
