Managing the Beef Herd program set for Sept. 23 at Camp Cooley Ranch

FRANKLIN – Managing the Beef Herd, a comprehensive program to assist cattle producers with making sound management decisions, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23 at Camp Cooley Ranch, 4297 Camp Cooley Ranch Road in Franklin.

“We have assembled an elite group of experts who will discuss the cattle market outlook over the next year and beyond,” said Edward Schneider, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent for Robertson County. “We will be discussing a number of topics, including how import and export markets affect prices, how to save money on winter feeding, as well as pesticide laws and regulations that might affect our operations.”

Speakers will be Dr. David Anderson, AgriLife Extension livestock economist, College Station; Dr. Jason Banta, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist, Overton; Dr. Don Renchie, AgriLife Extension program leader for agricultural and environmental safety, College Station; and Dr. Jason Johnson, AgriLife Extension economist, Stephenville.

Cost is $25 and includes a roast beef lunch, program materials and refreshment breaks. For meal count purposes, preregistration is requested by calling 979-828-4270. Payment may be made at time of arrival.

Built into the day-long program will be a contest to help sharpen individual management skills, Schneider said. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the day to those with the highest scores.

The program also will include a tour of Circle X Ranch operations at Camp Cooley.

“We will have the opportunity to view some of the ranch cattle and learn more about their management,” Schneider said.

Three continuing education units will be given to Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide license holders, two in the general category and one laws and regulations.
