AUSTIN — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Travis County will host a Walk Across Texas kickoff event from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 24 behind the Austin Community College Highland campus, 6101 Airport Blvd. in Austin.
The event, next to the Great Room Escape building, is free and open to the public. For a map, go to https://goo.gl/maps/JboR26PyM792. There will be signage and a balloon arch to mark the event location.
“Walk Across Texas is an eight-week program to help people of all ages support one another to establish the habit of regular physical activity,” said Sonia Coyle, AgriLife Extension family and consumer sciences agent, Travis County.
Coyle said those wanting to participate in Walk Across Texas can form a team of up to eight and start walking, jogging or biking.
“You can walk together, individually, outside, at a mall, at a grocery store or at a gym – any way that fits your schedule and lifestyle,” she said. “Keep track of your team’s miles to see if together you can go the equivalent of the 830 miles it would take to walk across Texas in eight weeks.”
Coyle said anyone can participate.
“Bring your family, friends, neighbors, pets, coworkers, and classmates,” she said. “You can sign up at the event. Individual walkers are welcome, but teams of less than eight are ineligible for our grand prize.”
Coyle said goodie bags will be provided for the first 200 event attendees.
“Three prizes will also be raffled off throughout the event,” Coyle said. “We hope lots of people will join us for the activities, music and fun at this kickoff.”
She said Walk Across Texas t-shirt pre-orders also will be available for $15 by check or money order at the event.
A Walk Across Texas follow-up training session will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at the AgriLife Extension office for Travis County, 1600-B Smith Road in Austin.
