BRACKETTVILLE — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Kinney County will present its first Kinney County Kids Cooking Camp July 18-20 at the KC Civic Center, 200 E. Spring St. in Brackettville.
The camp will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. each day. Youth of the age to be in third grade for the 2017-2018 school year and older are welcome and will be grouped by age as sessions allow.
“In this fun, three-day camp, young chefs will practice essential kitchen skills and master the fundamentals of cooking,” said Emily Grant, AgriLife Extension agent, Kinney County. “Kids will enjoy working alongside classmates while receiving instruction from experts on cooking techniques and the importance of a healthy and balanced diet.”
Registration is $20 for all three days, and includes a t-shirt and daily lunch. Registration deadline is June 30 and payment is due at the time of registration.
Some scholarships are available for youth from low-income households, Grant said.
On July 18, camp program sessions will address kitchen safety, chopping, food preparation and nutrition using U.S. Department of Agriculture MyPlate lessons and learning activities.
The July 19 sessions will address food preparation, how to read and follow recipes, protein preparation safety, icing, cookie decorating and making pizza dough.
July 20 sessions will address healthy recipe substitutions, including those for soft chocolate chip cookies, cheesy chicken pasta bake and chicken parmigiana.
Grant said registration will be limited to 50 individuals, so participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible by calling the AgriLife Extension office in Kinney County at 830-563-2442.
