COLLEGE STATION – The Legume Family: Taxonomy and Important Family Members will be the topic of the Aug. 3 natural resources webinar conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service ecosystem science and management unit.
The legume family is the third largest family of plants on the earth, with over 360 species being found in Texas, said Dr. Barron Rector, AgriLife Extension range specialist in College Station, who will be the presenter. The legumes are also the second most important family of plants to humans behind the largest family, the Poaceae or grasses.
The webinar is a part of the Texas Range Webinar Series scheduled the first Thursday of each month from noon to 1 p.m., said Pete Flores, AgriLife Extension webinar coordinator in Corpus Christi.
“This seminar will cover the importance and taxonomy of the legume family, the plant parts as related to individual species identification and how they are important to our rangeland industry,” Rector said. “I will also highlight those members considered as pests and address the three subfamilies of legumes that are identified based on flower characteristics.”
