COLLEGE STATION – The 2018 National Extension Disaster Education Network annual meeting is set for Oct. 16-19 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
The event is hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Prairie View A&M University Cooperative Extension Program. It will attract disaster education experts, educators and other professionals from across the country, according to Dr. Andy Vestal, AgriLife Extension special assistant and Extension specialist emeritus.
“This national conference brings together land-grant university extension disaster education professionals from across the country,” Vestal said. “The conference serves as both an opportunity to learn about emerging technologies and practices involving preparedness, prevention, mitigation and recovery from natural disasters as well as an opportunity to network and share experiences.”
The conference includes concurrent sessions on disaster coordination across the country involving hurricane response and support, preparing for wildfires, creating action plans and more.
On the morning of Oct. 17, Dr. Monty Dozier, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service special assistant to Rebuild Texas, will be the keynote presenter.
Conference attendees will tour the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Disaster City, getting a first-hand look at skills and techniques used in emergency response. A tour of the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory is also scheduled and will include tours of state and regional laboratories.
Attendees will also tour the National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing, which serves the global biopharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing industries.
On Oct. 19, a post-conference workshop, Community Health and Resource Management, also known as CHARM, will be presented. The interactive tabletop mapping platform is designed for local officials, stakeholders and citizens to map and analyze community growth in real-time and will learn more about flood risks and other potential disasters through interactive data and simulated experiences.
