MULESHOE – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Bailey County is hosting the Llano Estacado Crops Conference on April 2 at the Bailey County Electric Cooperative, 610 E. American Blvd., Muleshoe.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program will run from 9 a.m.-noon. The fee is $15, which may be paid at the door and lunch will be served at noon.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture general continuing education units will be offered.
For more information, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Bailey County at 806-272-4583.
“This conference is geared toward the ag producers of the High Plains,” said Curtis Preston, AgriLife Extension agent, Muleshoe. “We want to provide timely information about crop management and other industry issues that go beyond cotton.”
Dr. Calvin Trostle, AgriLife Extension agronomist, Lubbock, will be the featured speaker.
“A program like this is a complement to the regular Llano Estacado Cotton Conference that Extension also hosts. This will be a meeting where we will ask the attendees what information they need, then address that,” said Trostle.
Topics will likely include grain sorghum and sugarcane aphid tolerance in sorghum hybrids; some corn production, including whether dryland corn is viable; an update on current wheat conditions and any mid-season management considerations; other topics to include as needed will touch on sunflower, summer annual forages, and possibly black-eyed peas, he said.
“I normally like to weave some information into programs, regardless of crop, about soil testing and nitrogen fertilization,” said Trostle. “In an open-ended meeting such as this one, we want to provide whatever information the producers need.”
