PERRYTON – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s popular Ranchers Leasing Workshop will come to Perryton on May 22.
The program will feature Tiffany Dowell Lashmet, AgriLife Extension agricultural law specialist in Amarillo, and Dr. Greg Kaase, agricultural economist from College Station.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The program will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Ochiltree County Expo Center, 402 Expo Drive.
“Workshops like this are usually not held in the area and are not as affordable, therefore we thought this would be a great opportunity for area landowners and tenants to participate in and learn from,” said Scott Strawn, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent for Ochiltree County.
The cost is $50 per person or $80 per couple, and advanced registration is requested. Lunch will be provided by AgWorkers Insurance. To register, call 979-845-2604 or go to https://agriliferegister.tamu.edu/Ranchers and select the Perryton workshop.
“We will focus on legal issues related to grazing, hunting and livestock leases, including why leases should be in writing, how to determine the payment structure and rate, and key terms to include,” Lashmet said. “We work hard to be practical, discuss real-world situations and give advice participants can take home and use that day.”
Almost 1,000 Texans have attended the Ranchers Leasing Workshop, providing valuable feedback over the years, she said.
In addition to the discussion about leases, the two experts will spend a portion of the time covering landowner liability.
“Understanding the laws regarding when a landowner or tenant may be liable if someone is injured on the property is so important for landowners,” Lashmet said. “There are a number of steps landowners can and should be doing to be prepared if an injury does occur.”
Attendees will receive a copy of the Ranchers Agricultural Leasing Handbook and a follow-up email with any other resources mentioned during the day.
