Planning, hazard mitigation workshops slated for June 27-28 in Rockport, Brownsville

TEXAS GULF COAST — The Texas Citizen Planner Program will present two workshops — one in Rockport and one in Brownsville — on June 27-28 for officials involved with hazard planning and mitigation.

The events will be simulcast from both locations, coordinators said. The times for both events will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 27 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 28.

The Rockport event will be at the Rockport Service Center, 2751 Texas Highway 35 N. Bypass. The Brownsville event will be at Brownsville City Hall, 1001 E. Elizabeth St.

Cost is $79 for each workshop, which includes lunch on both days. Register at https://citizenplanner.tamu.edu/registration/.

“City officials and staff are confronted every day with decisions that will impact their communities,” said Steven Mikulencak, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program specialist with the Texas Community Watershed Partners, College Station. “These events will help provide them with the knowledge to shape community development for the better.”

Mikulencak said the programs address the connections between good planning, hazard mitigation and environmental stewardship that every local official needs to know. These include planning topics and trends for a positive community vision and quality of life, how to use planning tools to improve development and best practices for hazard mitigation and technical aspects of planning tools.

“These programs will show local officials the ways in which planning and hazard mitigation connect,” he said.

These events are funded in part by a Texas Coastal Management Program Grant approved by the Texas Land Commissioner pursuant to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Award.
